Through a series of Tech Notes on shear walls, design of different elements of shear walls will be addressed. In this Tech Note, the design of compression chords and bottom plate members of the vertical lateral force resisting system (VLFRS) is presented. The overall mechanism of load transfer is also discussed. It is important, however, that the designer remember that the many other details control the preformance of the VLFRS.
